In the early 1900s, grocery stores sometimes offered home delivery services. Homemakers would place their orders with the shopkeeper, typically for common items such as flour, salt, sugar, coffee, tea, or dairy items, and a delivery truck such as the one pictured below would bring the items to the homemaker’s doorstep. This photo shows Fort Branch local Elmer Richie providing fast delivery service in his Model T truck. Richie operated this grocery service during the early 1920s along McCreary Street in Fort Branch. Richie also operated a sawmill at the corner of Highway 168 and Church Street, and he sold bushels of coal to local businesses such as the Fort Branch Public Library.
