On Wednesday, February 23, 1916, local Homer T. Genung witnessed a train wreck just south of the Locust Street crossing in Fort Branch, Indiana. Genung was standing in front of Tom McCarty’s hardware store when the incident occurred. The wreck was caused by an open switch, resulting in damage that spanned over 200 feet, including freight car debris in all directions.
Homer Thomas Genung was a relative of the Fort Branch DeLong family, which donated majority of the local history items in the Fort Branch Public Library’s collection.
