The first school building in Haubstadt was a frame structure located on the southeast corner of West and Elm Streets. During the twentieth century, the residence of Leo and Catherine Willem Dewig stood on this property. After this first structure was judged to be unsuitable for school purposes, a two-story, three-room frame building was erected across the street to the west. In 1897, a brick school (pictured below), consisting of four large rooms and a basement, was built on West Street and North Gibson Street by Evansville architect firm, Harris and Shopbell. The building was completed in 1898 at a cost of $6,726.00. This school met the educational needs of students in the Haubstadt area until 1922, when it was replaced by the second brick structure. A tornado had struck the first one in 1918, damaging it beyond repair.
