Looking for something new and different to read, look no further than this month’s staff picks! Each month we give a staff member a few prompts to pick some of their favorite books. July’s staff picks were chosen by our library clerk John.
What has been your favorite book this year?
My favorite book I read this year is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This book would be a must-read for just its historical accuracy and insight. However, it also has an exciting plot and relatable characters. It follows a lawyer in Alabama who is trying to win a case in favor of Tom Robinson, a black laborer. This book is called one of the greatest American novels for a reason!
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is available at Fort Branch and Haubstadt Library and on Libby as an e-book or audiobook.
What is a junior book that you think everyone should read?
A junior book that I would recommend to anybody is The Story of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting. This book features a doctor that quits his job as a “people doctor” and becomes an animal doctor instead, thanks to his resourceful parrot. He learns how to speak animal, and is asked by the monkeys to come help them in Africa.
The Story of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting is available at Fort Branch Library and on Libby as an e-book or audiobook.
What is a book you are looking forward to reading?
The book that I am most looking forward to reading is Crusade in Europe by Dwight Eisenhower. Eisenhower was the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in World War Two, and engineered the assault at D-Day. He later became one of the most influential and powerful presidents in American history and president of Columbia University.
Crusade in Europe by Dwight D. Eisenhower will be available at Fort Branch Library later this year.
