Hidden Gems- August Staff Recommendations

Aug 11, 2026 | Hidden Gems

Looking for something new and different to read, look no further than this month’s staff picks! Each month we give a staff member a few prompts to pick some of their favorite books. August’s staff picks were chosen by our head of library outreach John.

What has been your favorite book this year?

Baseball in Evansville by Kevin Wirthwein. The book covers information and many fascinating pictures dating back to 1865. I personally enjoyed the stories and pictures about Bosse Field. Having been to many Evansville Triplet games over the years, those stories were particularly interesting.

Baseball in Evansville by Kevin Wirthwein is available at Fort Branch Library and on Libby as an ebook.

What is a nonfiction book you enjoyed recently?

The Rise and Fall of Dodgertown by Rody L. Johnson. Dodgertown, which was the spring training home for the Dodgers until thier movie to Arizona, was located in Vero Beach, Florida. THe author gives a great inside look of not only the teams and players who worked out there, but also a vivid history of the complex adnits relationship with the community.

The Rise and Fall of Dodgertown by Rody L. Johnson is available at Fort Branch Library.

What is a book you are looking forward to reading?

The Baseball 100 by Joe Posnanki. I’m looking forward to reading this book because Joe Posnanki tells the story of baseball through the remarkable lives of its 100 greatest players.

The Baseball 100 by Joe Posnanki is available at Fort Branch Library.
